Twitter Traffic

I’m sure most of you have heard of it, and likely have your own twitter account. People use this to plan parties, keep in touch with friends, gain interest in their blog posts, show the personal side of their business, share news, get feedback, ask questions, get contributions for fund raisers, and even win presidential elections… Okay maybe it wasn’t the reason that Obama won the election, but I’m sure that it didn’t hurt his chances.

What an awesome way to connect with other people, at the push of a button you can reach thousands of people. To think that it started off as a humble application that was used to keep in touch with employees.

Twitter has, in my opinion, cornered the market in this kind of micro blogging atmosphere. With around 5 million subscribers and growing it’s raised the question of revenue. As of now twitter doesn’t advertise on their site and I’m beginning to wonder why? In this day and age we’ve become use to seeing banner ads on websites as a source of revenue. Specifically on websites that offer a free service.

Twitter needs revenue, not because they’re greedy businessmen (because they’re not), but because it costs money to maintain a site. Could you imagine the costs that go into the updates and hosting for a site that big?
